Kindertransport Memory Quilt Square

Quilt 1, Square 8

Artist: Margaret and Kenneth Lowe

This is the story of Gretel Pappenheimer, who left Munich, the city of her birth, on a KINDERTRANSPORT on April 18, 1939 at age sixteen.

The train stopped in several cities. In Düsseldorf, a boy named Kurt Löwenstein came aboard. They embarked on a ship to cross the English Channel and arrived in London on April 20th, 1939.

Several years later Kurt joined the British Army to fight against Hitler and changed his name to Kenneth Lowe. Some years after the war, he and Gretel, now calling herself Margaret, met again in New York. They got married in 1953 and lived happily together for 41 years. They have one son, named David.
